Celebrate Vera’s 58th Year of Fighting for Justice

For 58 years, the Vera Institute of Justice has been a leader in the fight to secure equal justice, end mass incarceration, and strengthen families and communities in America. Today is Vera Day when we are excited to celebrate the anniversary of our founding in 1961 and renew our commitment to pursuing justice for all.

Since Vera’s inception, our mission has remained consistent: to work with others who share our vision to tackle the most pressing injustices of our day—from the causes and consequences of mass incarceration, racial disparities, and the loss of public trust in law enforcement, to the unmet needs of the vulnerable, the marginalized, and those harmed by crime and violence.

We pursue these goals in several ways—by researching problems that impede justice, piloting innovative and transformative solutions, engaging diverse communities, and harnessing the power of data and evidence to drive effective policy and practice.

Despite current national threats to justice, dignity, and the rule of law, we remain optimistic and determined. After 58 years, we see a broad and bipartisan movement to reform our broken justice system that is now stronger than ever. With increased attention to our issues, and new tools in-hand, we’re finding innovative ways to drive impact.

Times may have changed, but our commitment to justice has remained steadfast. This Vera Day, we hope you will stand with us and consider contributing, so we can continue driving change and fighting for equal justice.

Nick Turner
President, Vera Institute of Justice
