I think this is a great concept,
Offered to a family friend who sent it my way.

Hi everyone. The following is from my good friend Andrea. I know we all get tons of appeals a week, but please take a few minutes to read through what she says. Andrea is one of the most dedicated and caring people I know (and I know a lot of caring people!) and the situation with the yong man she talks about has really gotten her down. And that makes me sad. Hopefully, especially those of you who know Andrea, will take what she says to heart and look into donating a bit of youself and your time. I’ll let you know what I decide to do.

-Rachel

P.S. Please feel free to pass this on, with a personal message, to those who you think might be interested.

Hello,

I am writing to practically my entire list of e-mail contacts because I think that we need to do something about the state of the world.

That’s a pretty bold statement, let me explain.

This past week I was in court with a kid I know, someone I used to take care of. He is an 18 year-old Black man.

If this boy had been born in my situation, white, middle class, I would never have been in court with him this past week. He wouldn’t have been in the situation that landed him there.

The situation would never have presented itself. And if it had, the outcome would have been much different.

This is not how a fair, just society should work.

I am not proposing a revolution. What I am proposing, however, is that each and every one of us dedicates an hour or more a week to a volunteer cause, of your choice. This should not be a difficult feat to accomplish.

Let me give a few examples.

After/during school programs (sometimes there is a little bureaucracy in schools, but with a little bit of elbow grease you can usually find your way in)

Neighborhood centers

Literacy programs

Refugee centers

Daycare centers

Good cause publications

Meal centers

Nursing homes

Jails

Hospitals

Health related causes

Homeless shelters

Job training programs

Finiding low income students on your own and tutoring them in subjects which are difficult for them

These are just a few of the things I have thought of off of the top of my head. I’m sure you all can think of many more well deserving causes in need of assistance.

What am I doing, you may be asking? Do I talk the talk and walk the walk?…I am tutoring a girl for one hour a week in French at a neighborhood center. I am also working with this man mentioned above, as well as his 3 younger brothers, on their high school completion/ college applications.

I know that, in my list of e-mail contacts, most of you are already doing good work as it is. And some of your jobs may fit into some of the categories above.

What I am asking for, what the world is asking for, is a little more help.

One hour a week.

I am also asking for 5 more minutes, for you to forward this to everyone you know, and for them to do the same thing.

I’m going to send a reminder e-mail in a week.

Thank you and good luck,

Andrea Goldstein
