A place with music, food, and conviviality, to warm the souls of all of God’s children, in a neighborhood where people know that diversity is our strength

Omar Gagale and Youssouf Komara will launch Milwaukee’s “Timbuktu,” the last week of December

  • Timbuktu will be an African Music and Culture Venue
  • Timbuktu will serve food and drink, from Africa to Milwaukee
  • Omar would very much like to talk with people who would like to perform to plan family/friend/community events (414 630 2122):

Musicians and bands playing African, Latino, Caribbean, Reggae, and World Music

Standing night once a month reserved for Ko-Thi? One Drum? Drum circles? Rumi readings? Soap Box Orations?

    Artists versed in African themes

Poets interested in performances and poetry bashes

Community activists looking for interesting places to hold meetings, benefits, and all-city brainstorming

Here’s what Stephen Kinzer of the “New York Times” said about Omar’s and his wife’s Lula’s other business, Lula’s East African Cafe.

Where to Eat

Fine ethnic places are sprouting all over town. For inexpensive and delightfully original dishes from Africa, try Lula’s Cafe at 2921 North Oakland Avenue, (414) 962–1183. Ethiopian, Somali and Eritrean specialties, including one made with goat meat, come with injera, a tasty flatbread, and alicha, made from lentils and cabbage. Four can eat heartily for $40. Daily 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
