Handicap Insult: Ask Officials to Help Accessibility Warriors Stop This Abuse

Handicap Access Denied Access

If your work requires you to go from the
State Office Building to the Courthouse, museum, police administration
building, safety building, municipal court, it is at least a good
two-three additional blocks to navigate, due to how this project was
done. I called the city when the sidewalks were being torn up on
Friday to see what plans if any they had for handicap access during
this period, and was told no one knew who was in charge of the work,
they were investigating. Later that day, someone put down some very
flimsy plywood, giving some access to a handicap person needing to use
the ramp to enter the building, but now this is obstructed by the torn
up curb. I don’t think it is right that a state office building, with
numerous state agencies, should now be inaccessible to the public, nor
should people who have to work there be subject to navigating this mess.

We all need “access” help from our friends!

no advance warning, the sidewalk and curb on the entire 6th St.

side of the building was torn up, starting last Friday. The 7th St.
side of the building has no place for people to stop and let passengers
out, nor is it designed for safe pick up and drop off. There is no
sidewalk level handicap access on 7th St. In theory, we are told that
there is handicap access from the 7th St. Loading dock, which has a
barrier preventing cars from entering, thus requiring a handicap person
to navigate the barrier, the entire length of the lot to get to the
ramp, which is often obstructed by construction dumpsters and cars, and
then navigate up the ramp to reach a pushbutton to gain access to the
building. One will then be inside the interior loading area, with no
real directions as to where to go next. The building directories and
elevators are down the hall and around the corner. There used to be a
stairway leading down from the 6th St. sidewalk to the loading dock but
that is now also torn up. If your work requires you to go from the
