There are great resources in our “Holy City of the Sweet Water Seas” for your vision— the land and the people!

I would appreciate your considering this project a kind of prototype experiment that is sufficiently transparent that others can learn much by checking out our on-line record. There will be as well appropriately private areas, according to our respective wishes. Some information exchanges we would make very, very public. Others would be various kinds of privileged information, contextually determined.

Our e-mail correspondence, for example, unless we explicitly say “private,” I would like permission to upload to a section at the Renaissance devoted to our collaboration. With your permission, for example, I would like to upload your resume, your letter, and this response.

Much of the mentoring I can offer you is on-line “variable,” i.e. you are free to look into bodies of information I suggest. You are free not to. This would not be “billable work.”

I would imagine your working with me might inspire adventures that will not be part of the 2 to 4 hours per week paid internships, e.g. there are a number of people highly relevant to your vision I will do my best to connect with you, .e.g. WIll Allen of Growing Power, Sandy Foloran of the Domes, Howard Hinterthuer of Riversedge and Wellspring, Mark Heffernan of the Aenorobic Digestor Project, Jon Bales of the Urban Aquaculture Center, Dave Boucher and Stephanie Shipley of the Amaranth Bakery, Stephaney Philipps of the Reclamation Society, Jan Christensen of the “Riverwest Currents,” Sura Faraj and Nik Kovac, both candidates for Eastside Alderman, and lots more.

My time frame is 38 years of collaboration with you, some in Milwaukee, some from wherever we wind up. I hope to be a “nanosecond partner” with all of my interns during that period. I hope they will return the favor.

Some weeks I will only have 2 hours of time for this project. Other weeks I will have 4 hours.
Some of the mentoring I anticipate will take place while we are doing “manual work” together, e.g. gathering brewers yeast, composted leaves, veggie wastes, coffee grounds for compost piles, setting up basement worm castles for the winter, moving materials from warehouses to trucks to job sites and back again, entering e-mail addresses from web sites, etc. Other intern work will occur in some of my “offices” across town, during which time we will harness the power of the internet for the greening cause.

I would like these “billable hours” to be recorded at a web site we can both access. I would prefer the Renaissance for starters, or at least for the record, with yourself free to set up your own domain for recording and other purposes is you wish. At the end of each week I would like you to make a note of what occurred during the billable hours that you would allow others to read.

Some of my immediate goals for our collaboration are as follows:

• introduce you to the work involved and have you help at the Euclid House City Farm Experiment(billable hours)

• offer you introductions to and experiences with people who would advance your cause(non-billable hours)

• find you helping with grant and sponsor opportunities for the Milwaukee Renaissance and Start-up City Farm Kit Project(billable hours)

• offer you reading material and correspondence opportunities with people germane to your ambitions outlined in your introductory letter

Projects Seeking Interns

For the following projects I have $100 start-up budgets to invest. I would like this $100 to be managed by yourself and reported upon, in work stories. In the work story you would share what concrete work you did for what project at what rate per hour with what results.

For example, were you to choose to spend an hour on the “Promotions” project, you would do your hours work for a rate that would find you accepting spending 10 to 15 minutes entering information on your “work story.” Let’s imagine that you decided to promote theSt. Patrick’s 6th Annual Celebration at Timbuktu, March 17, 2008. I might give you 10 minutes of reading to do for your part of the project, and 50 minutes of internet outreach work to do at your pleasure. You would do the reading and the work and then write a report on what you learned and what you did that would take 10 to 15 minutes.
You would also say how much you wanted for that work, with pay rates anywhere from $6 to $12 per hour. I would wish you to consent to making this an open record of our collaboration, so I could ask a few of my movement partners to check out the work you did and the rate you charged while working on the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. This kind of process would likely open up some social enterprise opportunities for you if your work were excellent and your price was right.

At the end of the first $100 I and some of my partners, nanosecond and otherwise, would review your work story and we would configure the next $100 experiment.
