Growing Power on Milwaukee Renaissance

This is a section I would never have thought of myself.
A letter came in from the Riverwest E-Mail network:

While I love what I have heard and seen of Growing
Power on the web, and I am a big fan of the idea of
urban and sustainable agriculture, I think that fish
farming raises some ethical issues that should not be
overlooked. While we need not all be vegetarians, fish
are living creatures (on fish emotions, see
http://www.awionline.org/pubs/Quarterly/05_54_04/05_54_4p19.htm)
and raising them en masse for human consumption
overlooks that fact. I think most of us agree that
“factory farming” is a cruel practice — is this
“factory farming” of fish? A “harvest” of 40,000
fish! They are not just “things” to be sold for
“revenue.” If we are going to eat other animals,
shouldn’t we at least make sure that they are raised
and treated in the most ethical manner? I admit I
don’t have all the information, but I am troubled by
the wholesale touting of this with absolutely no
acknowledgement that these are living creatures.

So this place can be a site to learn about this issue.

Just this morning I was alerted to an article by Martha Nussbaum on the issue of animal emotions and ethics, located in a place called

http://www.ALDaily.com

AL meaning “Arts and Letters.”

Let’s talk about this!
