Milwaukee, WI, April 3—IndependenceFirst, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit with a vision for full inclusion of people with disabilities, will be giving away power wheelchairs on Saturday, May 4th from 10 AM to 2 PM at NO COST on a first-come, first-served basis. The giveaway will take place at the agency’s Mobility Store Wauwatosa location, 3720 N. 124th St, Unit F. Staff will be on hand to assist customers and make recommendations for the proper wheelchair fit. Recipients will need to purchase, at their own expense, the 2 batteries and charger each chair requires. Some chairs may also need cushions. Information on where to purchase these items will be available.
“Since announcing the closure of our Mobility Stores back in December, we have been working to get our remaining inventory into the hands of those who need it,” explained Deb Langham, IndependenceFirst Chief Operating Officer. May 4th will be our final blowout. All remaining power wheelchairs will be given away free of charge.
Customers will need to take their wheelchairs home with them on May 4. The agency will not be able to store or deliver the chairs. We have found that most of these power wheelchairs will not fit into an SUV and that a small truck is needed to transport. There is a power lift available to assist with loading the power wheelchair onto a vehicle.
The closure of the Mobility Store will not affect other IndependenceFirst programs and services. The agency will continue to work with consumers to increase their mobility, self-confidence, independence and overall quality of life through the more than 20 programs that they provide throughout the four-county greater Milwaukee area.
