Housing Marches?
I was at the Chicago Freedom Movement 40th anniversary conference on Sunday and Monday, though I missed the bus tour and can’t be there today.
I agree that there should be this sort of commemoration, but the markers must not begin with King’s arrival. One of the primary messages of the conference was that the Chicago movement was well under way long before King arrived, and that that’s why King chose Chicago when he was considering which northern city to come to.
The women who spearheaded the school boycotts and the fight against Willis Wagons should be commemorated, for example.
