Riverside University High School
I graduated as a National Honor Society Member from Riverside University High School in 2001.
Throughout high school, I began establishing a solid foundation of community service.
Not only was it a hobby, but I used volunteerism as a way to get into a medical setting.
This included activities such as: Special Olympics, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center
Candy-Striper), American Red Cross (First Aid Service Team member), AIDS Walk, MLK Health
Center, and People for the American Way.
I received my certification to become a Certified Nursing Assistant while in high
school at the age of 17y/o.
Summer semester of 2001, I enrolled in Alverno College as a Biology major and a
Chemistry/Professional Communication support; I was part of its pre-med program.
Two years later, I applied and was accepted to the Latin American School of Medicine
in Havana, Cuba. In the 2003/2004 school year, I was able to complete the Spanish
Immersion/Pre-Medical curriculum (two semesters) in Havana before depleting my funds.
This was a life-changing experience. It broadened my overall perspective of the world;
I was exposed to various nationalities and cultures, and I became fluent in Spanish
(all classes are Spanish Immersion). I reluctantly returned home with only ten dollars
in my pocket, sad but not defeated.
I re-enrolled in Alverno College where I continued to study until the end of spring
semester 2006. IFCO reported that I was still in good standing with the medical program.
Finances are the only obstacle. The Latin American School of Medicine does not meet the
criteria to enable me to receive a student loan. My immediate family, though loving and
supportive, is financially limited in aiding me to pursue my dream to become a medical doctor.
My fundraising efforts have enabled me to purchase necessary items such as: school supplies
and uniforms. ‘’‘I look forward to being of service to my community, helping those who may be
less fortunate than I, and giving back to those who have been supportive to me in my endeavors.’‘’
