Cuba - Medical Studies

Second year seemed to be very long and rigorous due to the condensed material and limited time for it to be absorbed…but I made it! Although the duration of this school year was technically shorter than my first year, this indeed was the longest most challenging year for me. Second year consisted of Phamacology I and II, Physiology II, Anatomy III (circulatory system, linfactic system, digestive system, etc.), Embriology II, Statistics, Psychology, Pathology, Genetics, Microbiology, Clinical applications, and the most popular…Physical Education…yes gym class (only for the first two years of the program though).

Now, all pre-med, first and second year students are sent to the Latin American School of Medicine, which is in the province of Havana but three towns overs from Havana City (in Santa Fe…most Cubans consider that area the “campo” or country in English). As third year international students, we are all transferred to different schools in other parts of Cuba. The U.S. students, and a few other countries such as Guatemala, stay in the province of Havana…we specifically move into Havana City. Other countries are dispersed in other provinces of Cuba, such as: Santiago, Camaguey, Santa Clara, etc.

So, the name of the teaching hospital I will be transferred to, for third year until I graduate, is Salvador Allende (known to many native Cubans as “Cobadonga”).

Classes for the Fall Semester of 2008 will begin September 1rst.
