Walt Whitman has moved to Milwaukee.

And Bridie Wines Godsil is his friend.

He did not originally want “Leaves of Grass”
To have his name on the title page.

“It would be a sacrilege to put a name there—it would seem
just like putting a name on the universe. It would be
ridiculous to think of “Leaves of Grass” belonging to any
one person: at the most I am only the mouthpiece…
I like the feeling of a general partnership—as if the “Leaves”
was anybody’s who chooses just as truly as mine.”

With the power of “wiki on the internet”
Milwaukee’s “Leaves” can really be a “general partnership.”

The Milwaukee Renaissance on line is “anybody’s who chooses.”

So too is the Milwaukee Renaissance in the old city,
Which will be one of the great American poems over the
Next one or two generations, God willing.

Walt is filtering his choice of neighborhoods through
“Leaves of Grass.” Here are some currently guiding his choice:

Walt Whitman’s Sufi Aspect

I am the poet of the woman the same as the man…

We have had ducking and deprecating about enough…

I wear my hat as I please indoors or out…

I know I am august, I do not trouble my spirit to vindicate
itself or be understood…

With music strong I come, with my cornets and my drums,
I play not marches for accepted victors only,
I play marches
for conquer’d and slain persons…

vivas to those who have fail’d!…

I am of old and young, of the foolish as much as the wise…

Maternal as well as paternal, a child as well as a man…

What living and buried speech is always vibrating here, what howls
restrain’d by decorum…

Welcome is every organ and attribute of men, and of any man hearty
and clean, Not an inch nor a particle of an inch is vile…

I am satisfied—I see, dance, laugh, sing…

And that all the men ever born are also my brothers, and the
women my sisters and lovers..

All truths wait in all things,
They neither hasten their own delivery
nor resist it…

And a compend of compends is the meat of a man or woman,
And a summit and a flower…
there is the feeling they have for each other,
And they are to branch boundlessly out of that lesson,
until it becomes omnific, and until one and all shall delight us, \and we them.

I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars.

Olde Thoughts on Lovely Snowy Saturday Morning at Svens

Mine is a more public garden,
But I like private gardens too.

El mío es un jardín más público,
Pero tengo gusto de jardines privados también.
