“I Sit and Look Out”

  • “I wrote this to try to teach students about poetry on a bunch of different levels and also to try to make a point to them about the way they were treating each other. I was teaching them to join a poetic conversation by writing their own version of another poet’s work, so we used Walt Whitman’s ‘I sit and look out’, and I was also teaching alliteration, style, word choice, rhyme, etc.”
