Another Call to Action: Ban the Box

EXPO leader Mark Rice has been invited to be on the Joy Cardin show on Wisconsin Public Radio this Monday, September 14, from 8–9 am. You can find the show on your radio anywhere in Wisconsin, but here is a link so you can either listen online, or find your local station:

Mark will be speaking about the issue of Crimeless Revocations and about Ban the Box. This is a call-in show. We’d be happy if many of you called in to be supportive.

As you know, WISDOM, with significant leadership from MOSES, EXPO and MICAH, has been working on the issue of Ban the Box. We’re calling for the question, “Have you ever been convicted of a crime?” to be removed from initial job applications. It is a step toward helping people who have been incarcerated to have a chance to re-build their lives, and not to be forever shut out from opportunity.

There have been some big developments. WISDOM is part of a national group that has been calling on the President to sign an Executive Order to Ban the Box for all federal jobs and for all federal contractors. We are pleased to note that federal legislation has been introduced, led by Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) that would accomplish much of what the Executive Order could do. WISDOM and EXPO have made a statement praising this development, while continuing to urge the President to move forward with the order.
