Contact Legislators to Support Procedures that Protect Children with Disabilities in Cases of Abuse and Neglect - PLEASE SHARE

Children with disabilities are nearly two times more likely to be abused or neglected and three times more likely than those without disabilities to be sexually abused. A recent investigation by a television news station reveals an alarming number of cases in which abuse of children with disabilities in Wisconsin is reported, but little is done.

Legislators are now introducing a bill that would ensure equal protections for Wisconsin children with disabilities in the child welfare system. Specifically, the bill will require that the Department of Children and Families develop a model policy to be followed by child protective services workers when investigating cases when a child with a disability is involved. Disability Rights Wisconsin supports this bill.

What you can do:
Contact your legislator and ask them to support Representative Kleefisch’s bill - #LRB4095 - to protect children with disabilities from abuse and neglect. (Senator Rob Cowles and Representative LaTonya Johnson are also co-sponsors).
