It’s critical that advocates, peer specialists, providers, consumers, colleagues, friends and family attend the meeting where we can put a voice to the needs for those who can’t speak for themselves. There is power in numbers! Please arrive early if want to fill out a card to speak or if you prefer you can stand with us in solidarity.
We have a major challenge before us and need to get the message across to all of the County Board Supervisors regarding the importance of investing in community mental health services. The 2013 budget actually reduces funding for adult community services. Downsizing institutional services will save over a million dollars which should be invested into community services!
Please contact your Milwaukee County supervisor (list below) and ask them to support Supervisor Harris’s amendment to fund community mental health services with the savings from downsizing at the Mental Health Complex.
| Budget Initiatives | Projected Savings |
| Close one of four acute care units at the Mental Health Complex | $875,224 |
| Close 24 beds at Hilltop, the intermediate care facility at the Mental Health Complex | $193,030 |
| Outsource BHD operated downtown Community Support Services (CSP) | $397,569 |
| PROJECTED SAVINGS THAT SHOULD BE INVESTED IN COMMUNITY SERVICES | $1,465,283 |
Multiple studies consistently recommend that the dollars saved from downsizing institutional care should support an expansion of community services and supports. This policy was endorsed by the County Board in resolution 11–516, and signed by County Executive Chris Abele.
RSVP to this e-mail if you are able to attend. If you would like to speak and are not sure what to say we can provide you with talking points. Speaking is not a requirement to attend. Please forward this e-mail to two people that would not typically receive it or be on the list serve for the Mental Health Task Force or Make It Work Milwaukee.
In solidarity please wear something RED to the meeting on Monday.
