By now you’ve likely heard that Walker’s 2015–17 proposed state budget cuts $300 million for the University of Wisconsin (UW) System.
This threatens to undermine Wisconsin’s world class university system, closing off access and further undermining economic opportunity for generations of future students. But our friends at Citizen Action of Wisconsin have a solution to prevent this disaster that is already getting support from key Republicans in the legislature, and are asking for our support to keep the pressure on: Add your name to the petition demanding Wisconsin stop the cuts to UW by accepting federal Medicaid funds for BadgerCare!
Here’s why: Walker is proposing a $300 million cut to the UW System, but nonpartisan researchers conclude that this budget could save $315 million if Wisconsin accepted the federal funds for BadgerCare! We could completely prevent the cuts and save more over time if Wisconsin accepted these funds.
We know this BadgerCare debate has gone on for a long time, and hundreds of thousands of you voted on the advisory referendums this November for Wisconsin to accept the federal funds for BadgerCare, but there’s a new twist…
State Senator Luther Olsen (R-Ripon), a Republican member of the powerful state Joint Finance Committee, is now looking at accepting the federal Medicaid funds to prevent the cut to the UW system!
Wisconsin is the only Great Lakes state to not accept the funding. There’s simply no policy or political reason Wisconsin shouldn’t take the Medicaid dollars.
Here’s the choice - “Cut UW or accept the funds for BadgerCare” - it should be an easy choice, and now we have the chance to rally healthcare supporters and education supporters in a powerful way. Add your name to keep the pressure on the legislature to accept these critical funds.
Thank you for taking action,
-Your Friends at United Wisconsin
