Mental Health Task Force/ Make It Work Milwaukee Update

The Health Insurance Marketplace saw an unprecedented surge of consumer visits yesterday, December 15, the last day to sign up for health insurance to start on January 1 of 2016. Since many people were not able to get through the long wait times over the phone or online, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services extended the January 1 coverage deadline until 11:59pm PST on Thursday, December 17. Since many people were not able to get through the long wait times over the phone or online, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services extended the January 1 coverage deadline until 11:59pm PST on Thursday, December 17.

People now have two extra days to go on healthcare.gov or call the Health Insurance Marketplace at 1–800–318–2596 to make sure their coverage will start right away in the New Year. Call Covering Wisconsin at 608–261–1455 to find free, local assistance with enrolling in coverage.

Though December 17 is the deadline for January 1 coverage, Marketplace Open Enrollment will go through January 31. Applying after December 17 means health insurance coverage starts in February or March. After January 31, a person will likely need to wait until next November for another chance to sign up. Only certain life events allow for enrollment during the rest of the year. Also, remember, people can apply at any time for BadgerCare Plus, Wisconsin’s Medicaid Program.

The penalty for not having health insurance in 2016 is $695 per person or 2.5% of the household income, whichever is more.
