TODAY, 6PM: Community Members Rally for Local ID Cards Available to All in Milwaukee

Who: The Milwaukee ID coalition: County Supervisors Peggy Romo-West, Marina Dimitrijevic, Khalif Rainey, Voces de la Frontera, Project Return, LGBT Community Center, Jewish Community Relations Council of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, MICAH, St. Ben’s Community Meal Program, End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin, transgender community members, immigrant community members, students, and religious leaders

What: Rally for Milwaukee ID Cards in advance of Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors public hearing

When: Today! Monday, November 2nd, 6:00 pm

Where: Mitchell Park Domes (27th and Pierce)

Why: If local government approves the creation and implementation of Milwaukee IDs, Milwaukee would become the 14th city in the nation to issue such IDs. Tonight at 6:00pm at the Mitchell Park Domes, organizations and community members will rally to support the creation of a local ID card through a city-county partnership. The card would be available to all residents of Milwaukee, in particular those that cannot access a state government ID because of lack of documents or money. The card would also allow transgender community members to self-identify.

Legislation creating the ID program in partnership with the city of Milwaukee passed the County Board’s Finance Committee last Monday, October 26th, and will come to a full vote before the board this Thursday. Last Friday the Public Safety Committee of the Milwaukee Common Council unanimously passed legislation to include the program in the city’s budget.

“Too many people are denied access to a full quality of life because they do not have proper identification,” said County Supervisor Peggy Romo West. “Some cannot get driver licenses or other forms of ID, making this measure critical to ensuring that people can get needed identification so that they can perform basic functions in society. Local ID cards are being used more and more throughout the United States, and it’s time our community takes action to allow people to identify themselves.”
