Three Ways We Fix Health Costs

By Kevin Kane, Lead Organizer, Citizen Action of Wisconsin

If we want affordable health insurance we need to use all tools available to get rid of waste and abuse while driving innovation forward. Unfortunately much of that is decided at the Statehouse, which means we need to fight for affordable healthcare right here in Wisconsin.

Here are three ways Wisconsin could reduce the cost of healthcare:

  1. Get Everyone Covered - More people covered means fewer going to emergency rooms and being unable to pay. This “uncompensated care” hurts everyone and make coverage more expensive for all. We need to get everyone covered and access to preventive health services before emergencies happen. Prevention saves money and saves lives.

  2. Challenge Insurance Companies - The Affordable Care Act kept insurance companies in the mix, but only as long as they help in guaranteeing affordable coverage. Wisconsin should not only challenge rate increases, it can and should actively negotiate on consumers’ behalf for lower transparent prices and better coverage. Properly overseen, insurance companies can use their purchasing power on our behalf to make the health system more efficient and reduce waste.

  3. Take Advantage of Medicaid - The federal Medicaid funds for BadgerCare the Legislature rejected is still available at any time. Accepting the federal funds directly helps tens of thousands and helps reduce health costs for everyone. States can also use the power of Medicaid and other public health programs to demand better service and coordinate more efficient care for everyone.

There is a lot we can do to make health coverage more affordable. And it starts with you. Forward this email so others can learn how to make healthcare truly affordable and universal and can add their name to the fight. Tell others to get signed up if they aren’t already and let us know if you are one of the thousands of people with more affordable health coverage and/or a preexisting condition now covered thanks to the Affordable Care Act!
