The City of Milwaukee’s Green Team from the Office of Mayor Tom Barrett has declared that it will release a list of vacant city lots that it wishes to be used by community groups as sites for community gardens.

It is our goal to acquire as many of these lots as possible, with the support of ‘’‘community stewards, in order to secure a local system of food production and distribution.

Mary Beth Driscoll of Riverworks and Milwaukee Urban Gardens(MUG, Stephanie Phillips, executive director of the Reclamation Society, are the co-founders of this initiative.

The plan is to produce enough food on these vacant lots to:

  • provide the Riverwest Co-op with produce for its members and patrons

  • stock community food pantry

If you would like to become a community steward, send an e-mail to
