Summerfest, the Soldiers Home, Tram, Neighborhood Businesses, & NAACP
Dear All,
I would very much like to act such that Summerfest opens its doors this year to Lula’s East African Cafe. Omar Gagale has given the Eastside a great gift in Lula’s.
See http://www.mkemenus.com/lulas/
He and Youssouf Komara are now making history with Club Timbuktu in Riverwest as well.
See http://www.clubtimbuktu.com.
Mayor Barrett and Frank Cumberbatch have expressed enthusiasm around this concept.
I would also like to explore ways of increasing the number of smaller, minority/women businesses who become vendors at Summerfest over the years. I would like to meet people who would like to apply.
I would like to work to
- connect Summerfest,the Menomonee Valley,and the Soldiers Home renaissance with Bauman’s tram idea;
- to figure out ways to help Summerfest “articulate” with neighborhood businesses in the summer rather than detract from them;
- find the NAACP partnering with Summerfest to advance the diversity of all of Summerfest’s projects.
All in a thoughtful, prudential, quite manner.
I went to the Summerfest offices today and was told that the Board of Directors of Summerfest was not public information.
Might anyone wish to have some on-line conversations about this issue.
Methinks heritage and cultural tourism is a potential growth industry for Historic Milwaukee.
I would like to see Summerfest, the neighborhoods, and small businesses of all identity groups form a mighty collaboration for the good of all.
It would be nice to spark the image of all of Milwaukee as a “Summerfest!”
What say?

Summerfest, the Soldiers Home, Tram, Neighborhood Businesses, & NAACP
Dear Bob,
These are the concepts I would very much enjoy discussing with you, Ms. Vetter, and Mr. Smiley.
In my next note I will send a bio sketch that offers some idea of what resources I would bring to bear on this great collaboration. Rocky Marceaux of DCD, Julia Taylor of GMC, Louis Fortis of the “Shepherd,” Natalie Dorman of “MIlwaukee Magazine,” and John Schmid of the “Journal” could shed some light on my role in our fair city, as could Mayor Barrett and most alderman and/or county supervisors.
Godsil Bio re Lula’s East African Cafe and Summerfest for All Milwaukee
Dear Mr. Babisch,
This file on neighborhood, ecology, preservation, and small business development projects is intended to offer you some idea of the great potential for a Summerfest Partnership with Milwaukee Neighborhood Organizations, Professional Groups, Small Business Associations, the NAACP, Milwaukee Public Schools, and other parties to make the entire city a Great Summerfest at our Historic, Great Lake City.
Not in one year, to be sure.
But Rome was not built in a day.
The Soldiers Home is to be Saved!
Milwaukee was the “German American Athens” at the end of the 19th century.
We appear on the edge of becoming a “New American Athens” at the dawn of the 21st Century.
All of God’s children gather in beautiful, historic Milwaukee, a great Great Lakes City, on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, where the waters meet, and people from everywhere greet.
This opens up an enormous opportunity for the Heritage and Cultural Tourism industry.
There are a number of parties who would like to have some on-line conversations about collaborations with Summerfest and World Festival projects and projects underway in Historic Milwaukee Neighborhood.
We wish to connect the Neighborhood, Main Street, Small Schools, Ecologyy, Preservation, Culutral and Heritage “movements” and “social enterprises” with World Festival projects.
The groups have been developing extremely efficient communication networks for social enterprise, heritage and cultural tourism, and knowledge worker development projects. I would estimate that there are a few thousand “creatives” who could be brought into conversations about collaborations with your organization.
The connecting of Milwaukee Cultural and Heritage tourism with Summerfest will prove a great moment in 21st Century Milwaukee.
I very much appreciate your time and attention in this matter.
- Soldiers Home Rebirth of Freedom, NAACP Summer Convention, July 9–14
How Connect this with Summerfest?
- Various neighborhood festivals, e.g. Locust St. Days?
How connect them with Summerfest.
Looking forward to meeting with you,
Sincerely,
Godsil

I want to connect Summerfest with the Menomonee Valley, the Soldiers Home, and the Neighborhoods, via projects and, over time, Bauman’s tram.
Might you let me know how it is that Summerfest and World Festivals has a secret Board of Directors?
I went to their offices to get a list of their Board, assuming I probably knew some of them from my roofing business. But the young Americans working there told me that was private information.
Do you have any insights into World Festivals legal relationship with the City…
What oversight powers does what body have regarding Summerfest and World Festivals.
What future would you like me to envision regarding Summerfest?
God bless,
Godsil
Dear Holly,
One of my life’s “peak moments” was seeing One Drum perform for Polish and German American working class ladies in their 70s and 80s at the Gordon Park Fourth of July Celebration around 7 years(?) ago. That was the moment I realized that our dream of all of God’s children enjoying the beauty of Gordon Park together had come true!
Would One Drum wish to play at Summerfest?
Jerry Ann, Omar, Cleo, Vince, Tess, to name a few of us, hope to inspire a mighty collaboration between the civil society of Historic Milwaukee and the leadership of Summerfest, aiming to develop a project that will find local talent like One Drum and Timbuktu participating in Summerfest, and Summerfest connecting its visitors to Milwaukee’s neighborhoods and local talent.
Local performance artists would be great for Summerfest too!
We hope to win a stage for local music, dance, dramatic, and artistic talent, and a section for “ma and pa” local food vendors, like Lula’s East African Restaurant or the Gordon Park Food Co-op, to start out from Riverwest.
We are going to do our best to recruit retired teachers from the metro area to begin meeting at the NAACP around this theme and others.
Would you be interested in talking about this?
May the Blessing of God rest upon you,
May God’s peace abide with you, and,
May the presence of God illuminate your heart now and forevermore,
Godsil
