Immigration Action and More!

1) WISDOM has an important immigration action in Racine!

Next Thursday, July 23, 6:30 pm
Emmaus Lutheran Church, 1925 Summit Avenue, Racine

The event will lift up the issue of Drivers’ Cards for immigrants. WISDOM is calling on Wisconsin to join the growing number of states that allow undocumented workers to drive legally. WISDOM has long supported this initiative, which will make our roads safer, allow thousands of people to breathe easier as they go to work or to church or take their children to school, and which will make life much easier for law enforcement.

We will rally people to support the efforts of State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa, who will soon be introducing a bill in the state legislature to allow for drivers’ cards. Besides Rep. Zamarripa, we expect other legislators will join us. And, we will be joined by a couple of busloads of people coming from the Gamaliel National Training.

A major theme of the evening will be Solidarity. We will express that Drivers’ Cards are a good thing for immigrants. We also declare that all of us - non-immigrants, formerly-incarcerated people, transit riders, people of faith - recognize that our destinies are intertwined with those of our immigrant brothers and sisters. In WISDOM, we work on many different issues, but at the deepest level we recognize that what effects one of us effects all of us.

2) If you didn’t hear it already, please take some time to listen to President Obama’s remarks to the NAACP regarding the need for criminal justice reform. You can see the whole thing here. Key excerpts are here. It is very encouraging, and all the more reason to keep encouraging him to follow through by signing the Executive Order to Ban the Box for federal jobs and federal contractors. This follows his pardon of some over-sentenced prisoners, and a hint that he will do more of that in the future.

A couple of people have commented that the President’s speech spoke to many of the issues WISDOM has been addressing in our 11×15 Campaign. He could have based his speech on WISDOMs Blueprint to End Mass Incarceration in Wisconsin! Access the Blueprint here.

3) Dont forget that WISDOMs EXPO Group, Ex-Prisoners Organizing, now has their own Facebook Page. Watch for their new website, coming soon.
